Sri Lanka makes rowing history with 25 medals at Asian Indoor Championship

MALAYSIA: (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka has achieved a historic milestone in rowing, securing a total of 25 medals, including 10 golds, at the Asian Indoor Rowing Championship held at Straits Quay Retail Marina in Penang, Malaysia. This marks the highest medal tally in Sri Lanka’s rowing history.

The 13-member Sri Lankan team, comprising both men and women, outperformed rowers from 11 other countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. The team amassed 10 gold, 8 silver, and 7 bronze medals.

In the Under-23 Men’s category, Sri Lanka clinched gold in the 2000m pair and 4x500m events, silver in the 2000m, and bronze in the 500m. For the Under-23 Women’s category, the team won silver in the 500m and bronze in the 2000m.

In the Under-19 Mixed events, Sri Lankan rowers excelled with gold and silver in both the 2000m and 4x500m races.

In the Under-19 Boys’ category, Sri Lanka secured two silver medals in the 2000m individual and pair events, along with a bronze in the 2000m individual event. For the Under-19 Girls, the team won gold in the 4x500m, silver in the 2000m pair, and bronze in the 500m.

In the Under-17 Boys’ category, Sri Lanka earned four gold medals in the 500m and 2000m events, one silver, and two bronze. In the Under-17 Girls’ category, the team secured two silver medals and a bronze.

This achievement represents a landmark moment for Sri Lankan rowing, highlighting the success of years of effort by the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka, as well as the dedication of their athletes.
