Sri Lanka U-19 hang on for exciting 7-run victory

DUBAI: (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s Under-19 cricket team pulled off a thrilling seven-run victory over Bangladesh in their Group ‘B’ match of the Asian Cricket Council Under-19 Asia Cup at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium yesterday, thanks to a match-winning century from Vimath Dinsara.

Batting first, Sri Lanka U-19 was off to a shaky start, quickly falling to 15/2 in the first five overs. But Dinsara, the right-hand batsman from St Sebastian’s College Moratuwa, steadied the ship with an exceptional knock of 106 runs off 132 balls, a crucial effort that kept his team in the game. He struck 10 boundaries during his innings, becoming the backbone of Sri Lanka’s total of 228 all out in 49.2 overs. Despite wickets falling at regular intervals from the other end, Dinsara’s composed innings ensured Sri Lanka had a competitive total on the board.

Sri Lanka’s fielding and clever bowling were key to their victory. While Dinsara’s century was the highlight, the team’s effort in the field, including sharp catches and quick returns, helped them defend their total in a thrilling finish. Bangladesh, chasing 229, was bowled out for 221 in 49.3 overs.

Bangladesh’s Kamal Siddiki fought valiantly, top-scoring with 95 runs off 134 balls, including 8 fours and a six, but it wasn’t enough to take his team over the line. Vihas Thewmika’s impressive bowling performance, which saw him take 3 wickets for 37 runs, was a crucial factor in restricting Bangladesh’s chase.

Sri Lanka’s victory places them in a strong position as they now head to Sharjah, where they will face India in the semi-finals, provided they defeat UAE in their upcoming match.

In the fast-bowling department, 17-year-old Mathulan Kugathas from Jaffna is another promising name emerging in Sri Lankan cricket. With his pace and slinging action, Kugathas has already caught the attention of many, and his performances are expected to make headlines soon.
